Matt Hulse 2013
Monday 31 August 2015
A collaboration with Sheffield FridayNightRide that followed a Sheffield Quartet ride in the day and also celebrated organiser Mick’s 65th birthday!
Director Matt Hulse came to introduce his film (with a song) and answer questions afterwards. Dummy Jim is about profoundly deaf long-distance cyclist James Duthie who hailed from the close-knit Aberdeenshire fishing community of Cairnbulg and Inverallochy. In 1951, he set out on a lone cycling tour to Morocco, changing plans en route and ending up in the Arctic Circle.
But the film is as much about the community’s efforts to commemorate Jim, with the local kids reading from his journal and local craftsmen making him a headstone.
