Plotlines season: Love

And so concludes our plotlines season…

You can’t get a more classic love story than this. Maria and Tony fall in love, but she’s a Shark and he’s a Jet. It’s Romeo and Juliet set against a backdrop of immigration, racism and poverty in fifties New York City. It can only end badly.

But there’s some great dance fighting along the way! The film, from a Broadway production has music is by great American composer Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The choreography is by co-director Jerome Robbins.

Unusually for American musicals, the film was globally popular when it was released in 1961. It ran for years in one cinema in Paris.

Thanks to Martin Carter and Sheldon Hall from SHU for their welcome, space, equipment and knowledge!
