Our afternoon double bill celebrated early cinema. Film collector and enthusiast Chris Wibberley brought along his 16mm projector and print of Blackmail, Hitchcock’s first talkie. A great film was given extra atmosphere by the whir of the projector, crackly frames and a reel change half way through. The quality of the print was astonishing, and the film was pure Hitchcock, complete with dramatic denouement at a national landmark.
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans may have had no dialogue, but it was full of drama, wit and feeling. Even though these films are over 80 years old, they are as sophisticated and accomplished pieces of filmmaking as you’ll find in any era.
