Letter to Brezhnev

THE SHARROW PIE EXPERIMENT, LONDON ROAD

We went back to 80s Liverpool for this love story set against a backdrop of a grinding recession, Tory cuts and Iron Curtain politics. On the DVD case, the language is stated as ‘Scouse’ – not wrong! We follow a couple of lasses on the town, who bag themselves some Soviet sailors for the night. Elaine (Alexandra Pigg) falls in love with Peter (Peter Firth), and has to write to Leonid Brezhnev and fight Cold War prejudice to be reunited with him in Russia. Against all advice she takes her opportunity to leave a life of drab unemployment in Kirkby and gets on the plane to Moscow.

This film says a lot about Cold War politics and propaganda, and shows how ordinary people got caught in the middle.
